A tour of Britain’s finest chocolate makers uncovers beautiful bars from all corners of the country


Chocolate is a powerful substance. Its flavours and aromas can connect us instantly to the most treasured moments of our youth. The way that it melts in the mouth, transforming from solid to liquid at the temperature of the human body, is sensually satisfying in a way that no other food can match. And its near-mystical ability to comfort is a source of solace to millions.

It is no secret that the British love chocolate. We make 660 million kilograms a year here, and eat around 7.5kg each on average every year, putting us in the global top five of consumers. Much of what is made and devoured here is mass-produced rubbish, fat and sugar with a miserly cocoa content.
